It's my first time taking care of a plant so i'm clueless. Why are the leaves and bulb withering / turning brown? (It's not like it's completely dying though because It's growing taller and new leaves are forming??)
I'm not putting it under direct sunlight and i water it once per week. The guy i bought this from mentioned "babies growing", I can see small bulbs growing underneath but is the other growth just weed?

Edit. Lol guys.
I’m as serious as this post about his about his onion.

Your first plant… is an onion… normally peoples start with a Pothos or something
I have two pregnant onions about this size!
This might not be the specific issue, but I recommend adding more inorganic matter to the soil (perlite or volcanic rock). The soil looks really damp, which might be why those other plants are growing in it.
Also, pregnant onions have “babies” by forming bulbs on the side that eventually fall off when the outer layers dries up like on an edible onion.
Some general tips and info
1. These are toxic to humans and animals, be careful and make sure any pets you have don’t chew on leaves!
2. I recommend at least 30% inorganic matter in your soil. I treat mine similar to succulents.
3. Bright light. I keep mine a foot or two away from an East window 🙂
4. Water when the outer skin looks wrinkled, deflated, and feels soft. This is when the body is green. This guy might be overwatered based on what the soil looks like. I would repot check the root system
5. Gently remove the outer skin when it dries.
Best of luck and happy growing! 🙂
It’s at least a little happy, because it’s flowering. Trim off the dead stuff and repot it – it’s probably severely root bound. Put it in a window and water when it’s dry.
Let the soil dry out completely between watering. My guess is you are over watering even tho once a week doesn’t seem like a lot. Also, trim the brown tips with clean sheers. That’s normal from what I’ve read.
Overwatering
Honestly, as long as the new growth looks good (which it does.) I wouldn’t worry much on what the old growth looks like. It probably was overwatered ONE time a while ago, I wouldn’t stress about it.
I would definitely put it in a bigger pot, carefully, and place it in more light. Is this inside? I don’t think those are weeds if so. Looks like clover which is great for fixing nitrogen. Being your first time, wait until the leaves fall over and harvest 2 weeks from then. You’ll have the coolest looking onion(s) 🤗
Keep in mind the sap can make your skin irritated. I work at a nursery and found out after cleaning them.
